When I was pregnant I was asked many questions. Where do you want to receive care, hospital, birthing center or at home? Do I want to have a natural birth? What interventions do I want to use? Do you have a birth plan? Lots of these questions were overwhelming and I felt like it was a lot to decide about something I had never gone through. After birth, I heard people suggest opposing viewpoints about when I should go back to work, if I should continue school, and if I should sleep train or not. After 3 months, the check up calls lessened and I felt alone. I was a new mother trying to figure it all out. I am dedicated to provide services to you and your family that make this transition a little easier. I am also here to support you through grief and loss related to birth and fertility, and help you and your partner in your marriage.
Pregnancy and postpartum can be a challenging time for mothers and fathers. Depression, anxiety, OCD and PTSD are the most common struggles new parents face in the first year after giving birth or after experiencing fertility issues, as well as loss related to pregnancy. About 15% of new moms experience postpartum depression and about 1 in 10 men are affected as well. I am here to help you get through this time and feel supported.
Are you planning to get married and want to make sure you align with your goals and values with your partner? Are you going to move in with each other and don't know if you are compatible? Are you planning to get pregnant and are not sure what you need to know or how to support your partner in this time? Why not try therapy?
I support families, couples and individuals in their pregnancy and marriage planning journey with the help of evidence-based interventions such as the Gottman method. I also offer ongoing couples therapy.
Pregnancy is a wild time. There are many emotions, thoughts, and hormone changes involved in this process. Will we have enough money? Do we know what to do when the baby gets sick? Will we get enough sleep to function? In therapy, we will talk about the fears and excitements that pregnancy can bring to you. Together, we will find goals that fit you and your family and will collaborate with your providers such as your OB/midwife, psychiatrist and others.
Do you feel like you cry a lot without any particular reason? Do you feel less or more appetite or sleep worse than in the beginning? Do you feel like you cannot keep your baby safe or feel like you are unable to bond? Maybe you have racing thoughts and every time you close your eyes you see scenes of your baby getting hurt? Maybe the baby is happy with your partner but with you it keeps crying?
Postpartum is a challenging time and I am here to support you in therapy. If you are a mother or a father feelings can arise that you would have never expected and feel overwhelming. Perinatal therapy includes the timeframe of up to one year postpartum and can be for both partners. I offer services in form of individual and couples therapy.
I support individuals with processing their own trauma, fertility issues, pregnancy loss, complications in pregnancy, birth trauma, NICU experiences, and abusive relationships with an approach called EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). In this therapy, you will learn coping skills, and be able to process traumatic experiences with guidance. Please see my therapy facts page for more info on EMDR or schedule a free consult call to receive more details about how we can integrate this approach into your treatment.
